Cheryl Bau-Tremblay, 28, was five-month-old pregnant and was reported missing for six days before her body was found in her home in 2015.

Though he was originally charged with first degree murder, her ex-spouse was found guilty of second degree murder.

The trial began June 4 at the Saint-Hyacinthe courthouse, almost three years after the initial arrest.

Sentencing will took place on July 9th and 10th, 2018.

There were no additional charges for the unborn child that was killed and the outcome of the sentencing reflects little to no significance of Cheryl’s pregnancy as a factor. Alexandre Gendron received only two years parole ineligibility above the minimal for a sentence of second degree murder.  The minimum ineligibility for second degree murder in Canada is ten years. Gendron received 12.

His history of alcoholism seemed to be more of a mitigating factor than the killing of his unborn child was an aggravating factor.

This case illustrates poignantly that “pregnancy as a factor during sentencing” as it stands in Canadian law plays a minimal role, if any at all.

Rest in peace Cheryl and baby.
